ImagoInsights
presented by Michael DiPaolo, PhD
Premarital counseling provides both prevention and intervention for couples. Research has clearly shown its benefits, finding that couples who attain formal marriage preparation experience a 30% reduction in divorce rates. When a couple seeks premarital counseling, the first step is determining their needs, i.e., is this a proactive step being taken by the couple or are they having problems that need attention before moving forward?
Participants of this course will learn key research proven factors for helping couples create and sustain a healthy marriage, and how to incorporate an educational component into the work. Core to any Imago work is helping couples create a deeper connection, so teaching dialogue and use of specific Imago processes will be discussed. Because low numbers of couples will voluntarily seek premarital counseling, a discussion of its benefits from a strengths-oriented perspective will help participants know how to promote this work.
After this course, participants will be able to:
- Detect and understand different reasons couples are seeking premarital counseling and be able to assess the particular couple’s need and develop a plan based on that need.
- Discuss and learn at least three different resources that can support the work with premarital couples.
- Demonstrate and provide education about the factors to create and sustain a healthy marriage.
- Utilize at least three different Imago processes to promote connection for the premarital couple.
- Identify a marketing strategy from a strengths-oriented approach to destigmatize the notion of reaching out to a therapist during the engagement period.
This webinar will be presented online via Zoom and is intended for Certified Imago Therapists, Imago Therapists in Training, and therapists in general at the intermediate level.
There is no conflict of interest or commercial support for this program.
