The Toothpaste Tube, Divorce and The Power of Poetry
presented by Jayne Gumpel
Friday, December 5, 2025
Discover how everyday moments and conflicts can become powerful gateways to healing, empathy, and connection through the art of poetry in therapy.
Jayne Gumpel, LCSW invites therapists into a deeply experiential exploration of how poetry can become a living force in the therapy room. Drawing from her Imago practice, Jayne demonstrates how therapeutic dialogue, session notes, and client reflections can be transformed into poems that mirror experience with beauty and precision. Through this creative transformation, poetry becomes a bridge of empathy—offering language for the unspeakable, deepening attunement, and opening new ways for clients and partners to connect.
Participants will experience how poetic presence turns everyday conflicts—the “toothpaste tube moments”—into sacred opportunities for repair and intimacy. Combining mindfulness, Imago principles, and poetic process, Jayne guides attendees through reflective exercises, demonstrations, and breakout experiences designed to help them practice poetry as both intervention and art. This webinar offers not just new tools, but a shift in how therapists listen, reflect, and communicate—inviting poetry to become a clinical ally in healing, resonance, and joy. Participants are encouraged to bring a case note or a set of notes documenting a couple’s therapeutic journey, as this material will be used directly for practice, whether it highlights a challenging “stuck” point or showcases a successfully completed sequence of sessions.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Integrate at least two poetry-based interventions (such as writing prompts, reflective haikus, or shared poems) into their clinical practice to deepen therapeutic dialogue and client self-expression.
- Demonstrate the use of poetry as a tool for fostering attunement and empathy between partners, particularly in the context of Imago-based dialogue and conflict transformation.
- Evaluate how poetry can serve as a metaprocessing technique—helping clients metabolize difficult emotions, reframe “symptoms” as meaningful responses, and enhance resilience in the therapeutic relationship.
This webinar will be presented online via Zoom and is intended for Imago Professionals of all levels.
