Black Marriage, Attachment & Connecting in Relationship
presented by Paula Smith, PhD, MDiv
Basic civil rights such as cultural attunement in therapeutic paradigms, and equitable access to resources for nurturing healthy attachment and communication have been systemically restricted for Black couples.
This webinar presents the findings of a recent pilot study examining the effects of Imago Relationship Therapy’s (IRT) Getting the Love You Want® Workshop on African American couples’ attachment, marital satisfaction and communication. This pilot study was conducted by administering pre and post self-report measures alongside a newly developed observational measure which allowed for a nuanced analysis of communication and non-traditional attachment classifications through detailed observation of couples’ interactions throughout the workshop. This training will offer practical insights and guidance to Imago professionals in their conceptualization of African American couples and individuals.
Duration: 2 hours
After this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Develop an understanding of the omnipresent impacts of racial trauma
- Examine therapists’ conceptualizations about Black people.
- Recognize how colorblindness overlooks a core aspect of African Americans’ lived experiences.
- Learn how Imago dialogue can help African American couples share hurts from racism, deepening connection and attachment security.
This webinar will be presented online via Zoom and is intended for therapists in general at the intermediate level.
