Part 1: A primer for Introducing Sex in Couples Therapy

How do you bring up sex with your couples? Don’t get left behind - younger therapists are incorporating sexuality in all of their work including couples work. They know what they’re talking about. You should too. Become sexually informed. It’s unethical to work with couples and not work with their sexual relationship. Even if the couple isn’t having problems it is important to check-in and have conversations about the sexual health of the relationship.

Learning Objectives

  • Evaluate sexual desire discrepancy
  • Conduct assessment for sexual health of the relationship
  • Question couples more comfortably about their sexual lives
  • Teach couples dialogues to connect sexually

Part 2: Trauma and Erotic Recovery

Clients with sexual abuse histories often come to therapy with questions about their sexual expression and the obstacles they encounter in intimate relationships. They may find themselves engaging in trauma reenactment rather than safe, consensual sex and need a non-judgmental space to explore what sexual recovery means for them. Even well-trained trauma therapists often lack the sexual language, comfort, and skill set necessary to assist their clients through the process of sexual health.

A huge gap exists between working with trauma and helping with sexual recovery for therapists. The majority of therapists receive no sexual health training and don’t know how to have a sexual health conversation with their clients from a sex-positive place. Trauma trainings teach therapists that once the trauma is healed a clients’ sexual health will surface conveniently letting the therapist and the client off the hook from talking about details of their sexual desires, functioning and fantasies. Sexual pleasure conversations are absent and avoided. Very little research is done in this area and this workshop will be cutting edge for any therapist who attends.

Learning Objectives

  • Provide concrete strategies to help trauma survivors live more sexually fulfilling lives.
  • Talk about sexual pleasure as it relates to each individual clients’ personal erotic code.
  • Develop and express erotic empathy for their clients as well as themselves by reflecting on their own unexamined sexual and erotic conflicts they may have as well
  • Dialogue with clients about sexual health from a sex positive place
Part 3: When the Other Woman is a Man

Discovering a Male Spouse is Cheating with Another Man

When a male spouse in a heterosexual marriage reveals he fantasizes about having sex with men, is caught looking at online gay porn and in gay chat rooms, and possibly is having sex with men, women--and these men--often worry that he is gay and that the marriage needs to end. However, for many of these men, this is not about gayness. A variety of reasons exist as to why men seek other men for sex which are not about a gay identity. Some of these men wish to engage in sexual contact with their wives which she will not do. He believes his sexual contact with men is "not cheating". Therapists, being politically correct, often believe the man is in denial about his homosexuality and move him in a direction toward coming out gay when--in fact--he is not. In this workshop, we'll discuss ways of dealing with the reactivity of the "betrayed" wife, confronting our own and the couple's homophobia, understand the male's interest in sexual contact with men, and helping the couple decide what course is best for them.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the psychological meaning of the arousal template of the men who seek sex with men (MSM's) who are not gay or bisexual.
  • Teach the couple how to communicate in non-reactive ways about sexuality and to understand what the behavior means and how it impacts the marriage.
  • Address the fears, anxieties and insecurities of these wives about her husband's sexual interests and how to help her listen effectively to him without it being personalized

Part 4: When Your Partner is Kinky

Helping Couples Have Erotic Empathy

9 am Pacific, 10 am Mountain, 11 am Central, 12 pm Eastern for 90 minutes

Most couples don’t talk about erotic desire prior to committing to a relationship. They think I can suppress it for the duration. They often pathologize their own sexual interest so they think it doesn’t belong in a relationship and they hide it. Eventually, their true erotic selves surface. Usually, by the time they are brave enough to share it, there’s a marriage, children, and their partner doesn’t want it. In this webinar, we’ll discuss the definitions of kink as an erotic orientation - what you get into. Most therapists pathologize kink and inaccurately see it as coming from trauma. Become aware of kink and the definitions. It’s not about orgasm, it’s about play.

Learning Objectives

  • Apply kink positive affirming therapy
  • Teach couples how to negotiate kink
  • Interpret self-shame and help increase self-compassion
  • Discuss and help couples develop erotic empathy and compassion
  • Prepare couples to integrate kink into sexual life

These webinars will be recorded. A link to the webinar recordings will be sent to registered participants shortly after their conclusion.
