Crisis and Suicide Assessment & Intervention

with Jeannie Ingram

Regardless of our specialty, therapists inevitably encounter those who are in crisis or contemplating suicide as an answer to pain. If unprepared or in denial (or both), we can miss the opportunity to help our clients safely traverse this painfully dark and dangerous place, into hope and healing.

Why are some people more susceptible and seemingly less resilient than others? How can we help our clients experience hope and support?  How does a therapist's own anxiety show up? In this training, participants will learn about types of crises, suicide risk factors, warning signs, assessment and intervention strategies. In addition, we’ll explore our own biases and fears, and learn to more confidently ask hard questions, assess and intervene effectively.

Learning Objectives & Agenda

After this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define crisis theory, including recognizing how crisis necessitates change; necessary components for positive change, as well as risk factors and warning signs for suicide.

  • Discuss and gain insight into their personal feelings about suicide.

  • Interpret warning signs of suicide.

  • Identify how to ask assessment questions.

  • Specify what constitutes an appropriate intervention.
