Inviting Radical Self-Awareness into Imago Dialogue

presented Dawna MacLean, Imago Professional Facilitator

Description

How people show up for dialogue, regardless if they are a sender or receiver is profoundly shaped by their mindset in that very moment. Taking a few minutes before dialogue to invite radical self-awareness makes way for a much deeper sense of curiosity, responsibility of self, and accountability of self and playfulness. With radical self-awareness comes radical responsibility of self in all that unfolds in dialogue and post dialogue.

In this session, you will learn to:

  • strengthen self-awareness with yourself and your clients
  • invite more consciousness into dialogue
  • increase consciousness in the roles your clients are playing and how they are showing up
  • strengthen focus on self-responsibility versus other's responsibilities with your clients
  • provide your clients with tools to practice and increase consciousness
  • increase presence and deepening in dialogue

What is Sensate Focus in Reality?

presented by Gail Guttman, LCSW and Deborah Fox, LCSW

Description

Most therapists have heard of Sensate Focus and some have preconceived notions of what it is. Sensate Focus is a complex intervention used in sex and couples therapy. It is not just a behavioral homework assignment. Every Sensate Focus exercise has to be tailored to the specific couple's needs and get their “buy in”. Rarely, does Sensate Focus work according to the plan. Exploring the aftermath of using Sensate Focus provides an opportunity for a rich exploration into a couple’s dynamics and their family/cultural backgrounds. In this workshop, you’ll be given the opportunity to experience Sensate Focus using a safe touching exercise, as well as practicing giving Sensate Focus directions in a role play. You will gain knowledge and confidence in order use this in your office.

In this session, you will learn to:

  • explain the concept of Sensate Focus
  • demonstrate introducing a Sensate Focus exercise to a couple
  • identify the complexities of Sensate Focus
  • develop ideas to address these complexities

This program is intended for Certified Imago Therapists, Imago Therapists in Training, Therapists in general (public), Certified Imago Facilitators and Educators, Certified Imago Workshop Presenters of Beginning to Advanced skill level.

How to be trauma-informed while being kink positive

presented by Maureen McEvoy, MA, RCC

Description

In this workshop, we will explore the overlap between childhood trauma experiences (particularity childhood sexual abuse) and kink expressions of sexuality as a consenting adult. We will discuss some of the many myths around this overlap. Participants will develop some skills to assess and differentiate between traumatic reenactments and healing opportunities embedded within non-vanilla sexual expressions. We will cover the means to open conversations with individuals and couples around this specific topic.

In this session, you will learn to:

  • discuss how to develop increased comfort in raising sexual topics in general and kink topics in particular
  • identify and address some of the myths related to trauma survivors who also have kink expressions
  • explain how to develop a trauma-informed perspective on kink expressions of sexuality with people who also have trauma histories
  • analyze the differences between trauma re-enactment and healing opportunities possible in kink expressions
  • differentiate between self-injurious behavior (a common practice with trauma survivors) and BDSM practices
  • differentiate between domestic violence and BDSM practices

Childhood Domestic Violence and Imago Relationship Therapy

presented by James Wisecup,  DMin and Linda Olson, PsyD

Description

Childhood domestic violence (CDV) is one of the greatest social and psychological problems of this country and across the world. UNICEF lists CDV as one of the most pervasive human rights violations in the world today and it affects over a billion people worldwide. More than 1 in 7 adults in the US or over 40 million people grew up as children living with Domestic Violence. As Imago Relationship Therapists, we know that many individuals and couples carry these painful experiences within themselves and express these conflicts in their relationships. There will be a brief overview of Domestic Violence and Adverse Childhood Experiences.

The main focus will be a presentation about what CDV is and is not, and what the common beliefs and distortions are that shape the child’s experience of growing up. Witnessing domestic violence is just as psychologically damaging as being physically abused. The negative experiences damage and impact the neurological development of children and their ability to learn, reason, make good judgments, and develop positive self-esteem. Having lived through domestic violence as a child, an individual can develop perseverance and other positive qualities such as drive and ambition, courage, and compassion and empathy. When recognized by the therapist, that these underlying experience of CDV exist in an individual and couple and are unwittingly influencing their interactions, then there can be more awareness and differentiation in the relationship instead of symbiotic entanglement.

A demonstration of a couple who is stuck and not realizing how CDV is negatively affecting their interaction will be presented. The beliefs/distortions of the experienced reality will be shown in a developmental process and how these wounds manifest in the present. The trauma of CDV and the post-traumatic symptoms present in the adult can lead to a new awareness and understanding and growth and change. CDV can be the engine of transformation. Many successful people have grown up with CDV and have developed resilience, new-found strength, and talents. We want to show that it is possible to take these experiences and transform lives.

In this session, you will learn to:

  • recognize, spot, and describe what CDV is and looks like
  • explain, summarize, and interpret the issues of CDV with couples
  • transfer and organize the new learning into concrete case situations.
  • help couples differentiate between the ‘here and now’ issues and the underlying issues of CDV and how it is affecting their relationship
  • learn how to effectively use the new understanding to challenge, change, and transform old beliefs and create new beliefs and a new sense of positive self.
